The Red River Fellowship of Christian Athletes received a big blessing last week as former high school coach Michael Henderson officially joined the organization to serve as an area representative.
Henderson has impacted the lives of young people all across the area during his 12 years of coaching, with the last five spent at Redwater ISD.
Henderson also recently became a licensed minister and preached his first sermon last weekend at Oak Ridge Missionary Baptist Church.
For FCA, Henderson will serve by going to area school campuses and reaching out to the coaches and athletes.
He will work to help form team huddles and campus huddles, which are basically small group Bible studies on thtose campuses.
He will also play a part in the six upcoming Fields of Faith events hosted by Red River FCA, as well as, the big Summer Showdown.
Henderson says that he will also be working with organizers in their efforts to start club sports around the area, with the first emphasis on flag football for both boys and girls.
Henderson states, I have always in my coaching career used sports to relate to life, and to teach life lessons. FCA will give me the opportunity to introduce and share the Gospel without all of the headache of having to win on the scoreboard.”
Henderson does all of that using his favorite verse, Matthew 5:16 as his guide. That verse reads, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
Fellow FCA mentor Melissa Motes said, “I’ve known Michael for many years through the coaching world, and he’s the real deal. He has a genuine heart for coaches and athletes and a desire to make a difference that goes far beyond the scoreboard. I’m excited to have him join our Red River FCA team and look forward to seeing the Kingdom impact he’ll continue to make in our area.”
Red River FCA director Eric Akin added, “We are excited to have Coach Henderson joining our staff. He brings a lot of leadership experience and relational equity to our team.”
Henderson and his wife Jennifer have been married for 21 years. Together they have three daughters, Bailee Shenold, Brooklyn Henderson and Brynlee Henderson.
