The DeKalb Bears and the James Bowie Pirates were the big winners last week as local football squads continue with their non-conference schedules.
The Bears amassed 437 yards of total offense on their way to a 44-26 win over Idabel with five players finding the end zone for scores in the game.
Bryuan Gardner scored twice on just eight carries and Maddux Burgin, Cedric Owens, Mal Stephens and DJ Parks each found paydirt once to put points on the board for the Bears.
This week, the Bears begin their prowl though the district schedule on the road to face a surprising 3-1 Bulldogs squad. Queen City has scored 99 points in their last two games combined, so this is not the QC of recent years.
But, they have yet to win a game against a team of the same caliber as DeKalb and with the key players on the Bears side of the field healthy, the Bears should be 1-0 in district at the end of the night.
The Pirates of James Bowie also celebrated a win last week as they swashbuckled their way to a 42-6 victory over Celeste on homecoming night.
The Pirates got huge production from their backfield as Nate Potter scored four times on 153 yards rushing and Cole Gipson piled up the yards with 10 carries for 172 yards and a score.
The defense also stepped up with Gipson chiming in with a pair of interceptions and Wade Johnson grabbing a pick as well. Braydon Tinsley was a force for the Pirates with five tackles in the contest, four for a loss.
Defense should be a factor again this week as the Pirates go up against a winless Cumby Trojans team that has only scored 32 total points in four games this year.
The Pirates should sail to another win this Friday and go into their district schedule at 3-2 on the season.
The New Boston Lions will host the Redwater Dragons on Friday to start district play, with both teams coming off narrow losses a week ago.
Despite scoring 48 points, the Lions fell to Grace Community last week, and the Dragons took a two-score lead into the 4th quarter but lost to Sabine 29-28.
The Dragons played without standout QB Braelan Morgan who was nursing an ankle injury, but Coach Bryce Haugh says his QB will play against the Lions.
The Dragons come in to New Boston at 3-1 and the Lions are 1-3, but these two teams are evenly matched and it could be either one’s ballgame to grab a win to start district. Homefield advantage plays a factor so let’s give the Lions a narrow win.
The Maud Cardinals sit at 1-3 on the season but that will improve this week as they travel to play the Celeste Blue Devils this week.
The Blue Devils are winless on the year and have only scored 27 points in four games.
They were trounced last week by James Bowie and you can expect them to repeat that performance again this week.
Cardinals soar to a win.
Coming off a 38-6 loss to Winnsboro last Friday, the Hooks Hornets will take a rest this week and get healthy before they start their district chedule off with past season nemesis Daingerfield on October 2.
