Friday night football forecast
West Bowie Post photo by Derrek Pebsworth New Boston running back Javontae Giddens finds a big hole to run through during the Lions 29-28 district win over the Redwater Dragons last Friday night.

Local football squads kicked off the district schedule last week with the district contest between New Boston and Redwater taking top billing.

It was a game between two evenly matched rosters that came down to the wire with the Lions holding on for a 29-28 win.

After the Lions had jumped out to a 20-7 lead in the second quarter, a missed extra point try late in the game for Redwater was the difference in the contest.

This week, the Lions will travel to Hughes Springs to take on the Mustangs who were throttled 55-7 by Daingerfield a week ago.

Let’s keep this one simple. The Mustangs are 1-4 on the season after going 2-7 in 2025, and they just don’t have the weapons on offense or a defense that can contain Ridge England, Jadavian Johnson or Christian Morgan.

It’s a safe bet that New Boston will be 2-0 in district play Friday night.

The Dragons will host Queen City this Friday and you can bet they are going to throw some fire at the Bulldogs after narrowly missing a win over New Boston.

This is a much improved Redwater team that will contend for a playoff spot this year.

Queen City showed their true colors last week against DeKalb, and they will not match up against the Dragons either.

Expect a big night from Redwater’s Braelan Morgan and Will Strudthoff and a district win at home for the Dragons to get them to 1-1 in district. The DeKalb Bears also started district play off with a win as the defense overpowered Queen City and QB Maddux Burgin threw for three scores and rushed for another to lead the Bears to a 42-7 win over the Bulldogs.

The Bears will take a bye week this week and prepare for a visit from Redwater on October 9.

The Hornets rested last Friday but will play one of their biggest games of the schedule this week as they host district nemesis Daingerfield.

But this is not the same Daingerfield Tigers team of years past. They may have scored 55 points a week ago, but that was not against a team of the same caliber as Hooks.

These two squads are more evenly balanced than ever and you can say homefield advantage will come into play.

If Terrence Gooden, Corbin Edwards, Cooper Eaves and Kavon Stiger and the rest of the Hornets show up to play, the Hornets will earn a much-needed win over the visiting Tigers.

In 2-A football last week, both Maud and James Bowie earned non-conference wins before starting their district schedules next week.

Both will sit this week for bye week.

In the James Bowie 28-26 win over Cumby, the Pirates saw triple digit rushing performances from three players as Nate Potter rushed for 165 yards and two scores, Cole Gipson rushed for 127 yards and a touchdown and Garrett Surratt also amassed 107 yards and a touchdown on the night.

The Cardinals will start their district season next week on the road to take on the Clarksville Tigers.

The James Bowie Pirates will begin their district schedule at home and look to start 1-0 with a win over the visiting Linden-Kildare Tigers.
