A brand-new restaurant comes to downtown DeKalb this Friday with the opening of Pope’s Place Barbecue and Catering.
The restaurant will have a soft opening on Friday, and will then officially open on Saturday, just in time for the crowds of Oktoberfest.
Owners Shane and Christina Pope will be joined by Christina’s mom, Juanita Hensley and the family operation will serve their customers all of the usual fare of a barbecue restaurant including brisket, ribs and sausage, along with sides, with everything on the menu being homemade and fresh. The menu will also include an ever-changing variety of homemade desserts and a special sampler platter of barbecue meats.
Shane and Christina have been married three years now and he approached Juanita with his dream of opening a restaurant, and she agreed to join the effort and make his dream a reality. Folks around the area know that Juanita has years of restaurant experience as she once operated David’s Diner, where City Café is now located.
Shane is known as a barbecue master, using his special seasonings to create a unique flavor in the meat selections, and adding TLC to the recipe by “babysitting” his creations all through the night before serving them.
The restaurant is located downtown DeKalb in the Reed V Building, at the corner of Runnels and Front Street, at the red light. They will offer catering both in house and out, to go along with daily operations. The restaurant also plans to bring in live music artists on various Friday and Saturday nights.
Juanita told the West Bowie Post that she has had people from Clarksville to Texarkana talking about the new place and she tells the community, “Come enjoy the food and the atmosphere with the family experience. We will have a good, clean Christian family atmosphere.
