Friday night lights has switched to district play with three big winners in our area last week with Hooks, Redwater and New Boston all grabbing wins in their first week of conference play.

The Hooks Hornets absolutely blasted the Daingerfield Tigers into another stratosphere as they outscored the Tigers 44-8 in the second half to earn a 70-35 win and conduct a little payback on their old nemesis.

The game was an offensive showcase with Kavon Stiger rushing for 357 yards and six touchdowns and Corbin Edwards stampeding for 172 yards and a pair of scores.

The Hornets defense was also in top form in the second half allowing just one touchdown.

The defense also accounted for points on the scored board with Asher Eaves and Grady Grant each nabbing a pick six in the game.

This Friday the Hornets take their show down the road to New Boston with a come from behind 35-33 victory over Hughes Springs.

New Boston QB Ridge England threw for 168 yards and a TD and rushed for another while Jadavian Johnson scored twice on the ground and opened the scoring in the game with an interception for a touchdown.

This game will come down to the QB matchup between Stiger and England. If the Lions can find a way to contain the speedy Hooks running back turned quarterback they can stay in it, but that is a tall order. Mt. Vernon found a way to do it, so we will see if the New Boston defense can.

But, after throttling Daingerfield, the scales have to lean in favor of the Hornets.

The Redwater Dragons will see a much tougher opponent this week as they travel to DeKalb while the Bear faithful celebrate homecoming.

Homefield advantage will play a big part in this district contest.

DeKalb QB Maddux Burgin had over 300 yards of total offense in the squad’s win over Queen City two weeks ago and with a week to rest the Bears should hold the better cards Friday night. Bears win.

In 2-A action, the Maud Cardinals open district play on the road at Clarksville with a game that they should win. Clarksville’s last contest saw them fall to Winona, and like Daingerfield, Clarksville is not the dominant powerhouse they were in years gone by.

With Maud fresh from bye week and still feeling good about their 48-14 win over Celeste, this Friday night Cardinals will be stronger than Tigers and take the win.

The James Bowie Pirates will host Linden- Kildare on Friday with the area’s top two rushers looking to lead the way to another win, and a 1-0 start in district.

The backfield tandem of Nate Potter and Cole Gipson are both well on their way to 1,000 rushing season and you can expect them to chew up some big yards this week as they face an L-K squad that gives up an average of 32 points a game.

The Tigers will walk the plank in this one.
